Register now for "Disruptive Wireless Technologies" event November 5, 2007! Join us November 5 at 6 p.m., at Granville Island Brewing to find out how disruptive wireless technologies – VOIP, IM, SMS, WiFi, WiMax, GPS/LBS, RFID and others – are already changing our world...How did these technologies affect our lives? Which ones can help our communities? What’s next? What’s your contribution? What’s Disruptive Technology?
According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia..."A disruptive technology or disruptive innovation is a technological innovation, product, or service that eventually overturns the existing dominant technology or status quo product in the market. Disruptive innovations can be broadly classified into lower-end and new-market disruptive technologies. A new-market disruptive innovation is often aimed at non-consumption, whereas a lower-end disruptive innovation is aimed at mainstream customers who were ignored by established companies." For instance in 1980s hard disks did that for notebook computers by replacing older technologies, or more recently digital photography, through a series of performance improvements, managed to displace incumbent companies and replace film photography. "What The Hell – It’s Possible!"
Guy Kawasaki, in his best seller "Art of the Start", has this to say: "Markets for curve-jumping, paradigm-shifting leaps are seldom proven in advance. For example, when Motorola invented cellular phones, no one leaped to buy them. At that time, portable phone was an oxymoron because phones were always attached to places. There was no market for phones that customers could move." It was in April 1973 when Dr. Martin Cooper from Motorola, inventor of the first portable phone, made his first call. That phone weighted two pounds, was a foot long and costing $4,000! 34 years later we’re seeing a HUGE market of consumers using mobile phones everyday: 18.5 million in Canada, almost 200 million in the US and 2.5 billion worldwide! New: Speed Demos!
Mobility and speed are two of our main characteristics as an industry. A few weeks ago we participated at an event produced by TechVibes called Launch Party (very well organized) and had an opportunity to look at a few companies “Speed Demo-ing”. We thought it is a good idea so we’re offering the same opportunity at our MoMoVan events to established and start-up wireless and web 2.0 companies. The intent of this module is to enable companies to show what they have in a compelling way as quickly as possible. Only four to six companies can demo their products to a very knowledgeable audience for 20 -30 minutes at the end of each event. Send your request for a speed demo table to michael@winbc.org Local Rebels. Disruptive Wireless Technologies!
