April, May and June mean more than just spring flowers, and for many of us, these months signal the arrival of conference season. Many North American communication professionals are busy polishing their trade show booths, practicing their handshakes and preparing mountains of media kits hoping to draw potential customers to their booths. Trade shows have evolved greatly over the last few years, and those who take advantage of the latest technology often stand out from the crowd.

Here are some tips.

Live or "canned" presentations are effective sales tools. Demo your website, products & services on-site. Use laptops, flat-panel monitors or plasma screens at your booth complete with high-speed Internet access to guide visitors through your website, product demonstrations or sales presentations.

Make a lot of information available to a lot of people. Supplement the printed literature available at your booth with electronic media kits, complete with your corporate materials and marketing collateral. Take advantage of on-site newswire companies and send press releases directly from the trade show floor if you launch a new product during the show.

Take advantage of blogs and podcasts. Why not create a blog prior to the trade show and post entries from the event? If you are part of an industry or expert panel, arrange with the show’s producers in advance to have your session recorded. That audio file can quickly be transformed into a podcast and made available as a link from your website.
