MESSAGE From the Executive Director
As the days become shorter and the nights longer and September looms, WINBC settles in for a busy fall event season.
Our first Face_Time event will be hosted October 18th at the Hyatt Regency as we welcome a visiting UK Delegation for a full day of one-on-one meetings followed by a networking reception and Mobile Monday presentation.
A second Face_Time event is currently in the works with Microsoft for November. The event will cover how our local companies can successfully “do business” with Microsoft, the Microsoft roadmap, what solutions are currently being sought, and business development and partnering protocol (the how to's and the not to do’s). Stay tuned for further details on both events.
WINBC has also partnered with several other organizations to assist with and promote the following fall wireless events:
- Wireless Seedstage Forum 2007-October 17th Austin Texas
- Networking opportunity for Canadian Companies at CTIA-October 24th San Francisco
- Wireless Connections hosted by WiTec Alberta- November 15th & 16th Banff Alberta
More information on these partner activities and other collaborative events.
Our most substantive undertaking over the course of the past few months has been a focused effort on building on the momentum of our 2nd Service Provider Investment Forum (SPIF) hosted this past January. With two successful annual events under our belts we will once again be expanding this event in ‘08 offering two days of activities. Day 1 will offer our first ever Pacific Northwest Wireless Conference. Attendees will be able to choose from concurrent sessions and workshops showcasing local, national, and international wireless expertise. Day 2 will offer an opportunity to 10, pre-screened and pre-selected companies from all across Canada, who are looking for smart money and partnership opportunities to present to SPIF investors and committee members. SPIF members include Qualcomm, NTT DoCoMo, British Telecom, Samsung and Vodafone.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to personally inform you that I have officially resigned my post as Executive Director of WINBC, and I sit and write this column from my new home in BC’s wine country, sunny Kelowna.
I will continue some remote work for WINBC until my successor has been named and has joined the WINBC team and will remain the main contact for WINBC in the interim. Our new Chair, Robert Forget of Vecima Networks, can also be reached at chair@winbc.org. I would like to thank all of you for providing me with the opportunity to get better acquainted with your companies and yourselves personally during my time with the Association. I believe the role of WINBC is instrumental to the continued success within our wireless community and I look forward to seeing continued growth from both the Association and all those involved in the wireless sector.
Best wishes for continued success.

Broadband Wireless Ecosystem
Summer is officially drawing to a close bringing us to a busy and productive fall/winter season. For my first contribution to the newsletter I will be discussing ecosystems and using them to grow business. The ecosystem that I am most familiar with is in ‘broadband wireless’, more specifically ‘WiMAX’. Many companies miss the fact that if they create a specific piece of technology that they do not have a complete system. This misconception is detrimental to continued growth especially for niche and start up companies.
To illustrate, in WiMAX, most customers are also looking for VoIP equipment, cabling, antennas, network management, topology and maintenance software, billing servers, and often IPTV equipment. Looking at a full deployment you will see 5-10 manufacturers completing different portions of the network. In some cases this becomes very difficult for a customer to manage and so they use a VAR or systems integrator to pull all the vendors together. As a WiMAX equipment manufacturer we are very cognizant of the ecosystem as a whole and partner with many of the supporting vendors to be able to offer more value to our customers.
In each industry the partner companies change and the components vary but there is always an ecosystem. For hardware companies, a good relationship with your component vendors and/or enclosure vendors increases lead generation and simplifies support. For software companies, the ecosystem is massive including everything from hardware to networks, to the operating system and the programming language used. Service companies involved in the installation, training, or provisioning are also part of the whole. This would include any distributors, VARs, systems integrators, spectrum holders (if your customer leases spectrum), etc.
Overall the better your relationship within your specific ecosystem, the greater your opportunities will be to push your products into the market. With a small focused company any unpaid help is always appreciated and often partners will find customers that you may never have even thought of approaching. Do what you do to the best of your abilities, and remember that a sale for your company generates a sale for many others as well. Make sure that we take advantage of the companies we work with and help each other to grow our businesses moving forward.

MEMBER PROFILE
Nizar Assanie of IE Market Research tells us about his organization and provides us an insight into BC's wireless industry.
Coming Growth of Data Usage means big business for British Columbia’s Wireless and Mobile Content Clusters
The future of wireless mobility is Data! As voice penetration rates across the world reach a plateau, value added services (VAS) are taking on a new dimension as the primary drivers of subscriber-base retention and growth for carriers. Carriers are hoping that the introduction of these data services, and the content and applications that go with it, will lessen the burden of having to rely on a highly competitive voice market for up to 85% of their revenues. With carriers investing in 3G, WiMax, and wVOIP infrastructure, the large scale provision of these services at a reasonable cost is becoming increasingly practical.
IE Market Research Corp.’s forecasts for 180 operators in 50 countries shows the large potential for data services over the not to distant future. We are projecting that by 2011, the global market for mobile data would be worth US$ 165 billion, an increase of over 43% over 2006 levels.
