MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The holiday season is officially upon us and the clock is ticking as we all attempt to find that perfect gift for that special someone. This month we're turning the tables and asking the opinions of our local wireless CEOs. What gift tops their lists? What do they hope to find under the tree this Christmas morning? The new Microsoft Zune, a Sony PS3, or perhaps a romantic Roomba robot vacuum. The Brondell's Swash electronic toilet seat should make for quite the conversation piece or what about a TomTom for those of us directionally challenged. I have a feeling the best gift of all may be a few days of peace and quiet. I wonder if I can request that last one gift wrapped...

Before we break for the holidays, two important events to draw your attention to:

  • Registration for our SPIF Panel Presentation and Keynote with Jason Cohenour, CEO, Sierra Wireless on January 25th, 2007 is now available.

    Panelists:

    • Aymerik Y.C. Renard, General Partner, Innovacom Venture Capital / France Telecom
    • Rakesh Sood, Venture Advisor, DoCoMo Capital
    • Alan Strachan, Director of Technology Assessment, Telus Ventures
    • Mark Bagley, Office of the CTO, British Telecom

    Moderator:
    • Derek Kerton, Principal, The Kerton Group

  • Also, applications for our 4th Annual Wireless Contest (WIC'07) are currently being accepted until the Contest close January 29th, 2007.

Happy and safe holidays to you and yours. May 2007 bring all of you much success and happiness.

Best wishes for the holiday season,

Shana Korotash
Executive Director

LETTER'S TO SANTA

We asked member company CEOs what they want for Christmas and why. Here's what topping their lists. We'll make sure we pass on your requests to Santa.

Bill Tam, CEO of Eqo has a list:

  • Bose Soundock speaker system for my iPod – the sound quality is awesome in such a small package.
  • A Slingbox – that way I can watch my own TV no matter where I am in the world. This includes CBC broadcasts of hockey games.

William Mutual, Chairman and CEO of ComVu:

With 3GSM coming up soon, I remembered the disturbing incident of the Spanish radiation checker walking around the "wireless everywhere" exhibition halls and reporting that we were at 880% of the maximum EMF one should be exposed to for longer then 20 minutes. It's obvious I need a telecom version of the Gammawatch.

Sean Gocher, President and Founder of TenDigits Software:

The Logitech® Harmony® 880 Advanced Universal Remote. This is so I don't have to provide A/V tech support to visiting family members over the holidays.

Barry Jinks, President and CEO of Colligo Networks:

Gadget: Nikon D-series Digital SLR

Why: I used to take a lot of photos. Over the years, I've collected a number of Nikon SLR film cameras and have always been happy with their performance. When digital cameras first came out, the SLR's didn’t measure up to film. However, they are so convenient and have so many benefits (no film, digital editing), that I decided to get a digital snapshot camera and live with the lack of capability. Now Nikon has introduced a line of digital SLRs that are not only affordable, but have performance that almost matches my old film cameras. And I can use my old Nikon lenses. It's time to get back into photography again.

Mark Cameron, President and CEO, Techneos Systems:

I would like a portable DVD player to replace the 2" Black & White Sony Watchman that I bought in 1989 (which works amazingly well for football games, but not so great for hockey).

Perry Quan, President of Contec Innovations:

Nintendo Wii - more for my kids than me; but I occasionally enjoy some gaming fun too.

Caroline Lewko, CEO, Wireless Industry Partnership (WIP):

I'd like the Sony Ericsson k800i camera phone (greater if it was available on the Canadian networks). I could really use it on my travels to capture the people I meet along the way. Not only does it have a great camera, but a simple click process to get photographs onto a blogspot bog. I have a blog, but have a terrible time keeping up with it. Being able to capture some of the thoughts and pictures when they happen would make my life easier and my blog more exciting!!
