Journalism 2.0
Lisa Davis of CCNMatthews, the news distribution company, gives us an insight to citizen journalism.
Tonight’s top story could be tucked inside your pocket, purse or knapsack. The omnipresence of cell phones, PDAs and any mobile device that combines a camera with the ability to transmit pictures and text instantaneously around the world has created the mobile journalist.
This is not entirely new. The world watched immediate, first-hand accounts of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 and Michael Richards in 2006. What is changing – at an indescribable pace – is the proliferation of outlets and platforms to carry this content, and the seemingly insatiable appetite for these eyewitness accounts. Major news organizations in North America and the UK have gone so far as to establish "user-generated content" desks (CNN Exchange, You Witness News from Yahoo! and Reuters), while sites like YouTube surge in popularity. Add to this the explosion of blogging, sharing, tagging and all things social media, and you’ve got what some call a global culture of "citizen journalism".
While it certainly has a long way to go before replacing its traditional predecessor, citizen journalism is here to stay. The technology to create, distribute and share news content is evolving at an unrelenting pace, and we are undoubtedly knee-deep in the revolution of news and information.
Grab your cell phone…you’ve got work to do.
