IDC Profiles Ten Canadian Software Companies to Watch

IDC has released a new study that profiles ten relatively small, emerging software companies in Canada that it deems particularly worthy of note. These companies have overcome internal challenges, and have successfully contended with the ever-changing ICT industry, evolving regulations and standards, and large competitors with even larger marketing budgets. They have the potential to impact the ICT market in Canada and beyond.

"Canadian innovations that we can export are an imperative for the current and future success of our economy and the expectations of an improving standard of living of our citizens. Without companies like the ones highlighted in this study, we will be bound to a commodity-driven economy that will surely be in decline over time. At IDC Canada, we applaud these innovators and believe we need more of these types of organizations to ensure our future well-being," says Vito Mabrucco, managing director of IDC Canada. The analysis in the study, Ten Canadian Software Companies to Watch (IDC #CA3EA7), provides valuable input to ICT vendors, large and small, identifying the success factors employed by top emerging Canadian software vendors.

These factors include:

  • Foster and focus innovation
  • Build a sustainable business model by investing the business as opposed to product strategy
  • Support from both the private and public sectors is a key component for success

According to Krista Collins, analyst for Canadian IT Innovation and Export, and one of the authors of the report: "The companies in this study have not only developed impressive solutions; they have lists of impressive customers and partners who continue to benefit from their technology. While these large organizations could have turned to 'tried and true' vendors, they were attracted by the innovation, speed, power and flexibility that these smaller companies have demonstrated."

The ten companies featured in the report are:

  • Apparent Networks
  • Casero
  • Coveo
  • Halogen
  • Idée Inc.
  • Loki
  • M-Tech
  • Objectworld
  • Osellus
  • Privasoft

The report is available on IDC's website.

This study is the first of a series of documents that will feature emerging Canadian ICT companies. Future reports will profile companies within wireless and mobile, hardware, services, and those companies with "green technologies". The studies will examine emerging companies, their solutions, why they have been successful, and offer guidance on how other innovative companies can emulate that success.
