Information Overload 2.0
Lisa Davis of CCNMatthews, the news distribution company, gives us an insight to citizen journalism.
Riding the subway to work I watch my fellow passengers typing, listening, texting, viewing, gaming, tapping, scrolling and shuffling on one device or another. I wonder if these devices have left us literally grappling with all of the bells and whistles available in today's gadgetry and whether we've become victims of what some have termed a technology-induced "time famine".
The seemingly endless amount of information available today to download, upload, stream and save can be overwhelming, and for many the e-information experience has all but replaced old school activities like reading newspapers and watching television. But are we saving any time replacing the old with the new? The list of podcasts I’ve not (yet) listened to is as long as the pile of unread magazines is high, and the email I’ve flagged as important now outnumber the “To Do” sticky-notes artfully framing my monitor. In both cases, my intention was for the former to replace the latter.
Momentarily distracted by a fellow passenger watching Office Space on his PSP I exit the subway, take a deep breath and head to the office, readying myself for the deluge of RSS feeds, voice mail and email that awaits me. If only I had a Blackberry...
