We asked Andrew Chow of iCommuniti to tell us about his organization.

Stay connected in a new dimension

Despite Vancouver's renowned global position and all the heat and hype of the Winter Olympics, the goal of a 2010 municipal WiFi is running out of time. Commercial network service providers usually sell wireless data networks for an aristocratic price tag and data transmission in a close premise under strict contracts. The city could work with them for a prohibitively expensive citywide coverage, or it can be innovative and work with the public access activists who undertake a similar social objective.

iCommuniti Networks is such non-profit technology expert that builds sustainable social networks and promotes public communication tools, in support of developing a sustainable digital Vancouver. The team strongly believes that information technology, if explore and utilize appropriately, could reverse digital barriers, democratize value, and advance social development. It should empower people to see, communicate, and bind themselves as part of the community rather than segregating them.

Collaborating with other leading wireless experts and organizations, iCommuniti hopes to secure a bid to oversee an affordable and workable municipal WiFi solution on time using the latest wireless products and WiFi technology. Recently, the company has successfully launched a strategic alliance with B.C. Wireless. It is currently detailing a plan for a trial WiFi at a popular Vancouver site.

Besides enhancing public accessibility of information, iCommuniti is determined to bring together expertise and leaders in the wireless technology and digital broadband domain in creating a new dimension in mobile communications. Its on-going strategic business plans include distributing high-quality open source innovations, educating resources and expertise to the public, driving ground-breaking integration of technology advances and leaderships, implementing best business and community practice, and operating a lean convergent business model, that promote and fit into the company's lifelong mission.

The response from partners, industrial leaders, and the public has been extremely positive and supportive. It is the team’s constant inspiration that Vancouver will be the first in the world to have a one-of-the-kind open wireless network with economic and environmental sustainability, and that it achieves it with a collaborative force of community advocates. Combining the economic efforts of hosting the 2010 Games, perfecting the transportation challenge, and administrating globalization and digital democratization, Vancouver will be right on track in realizing its competitive business climate and quality of life, and becoming a world class habitat.

Just like a Canucks fan club, iCommuniti exists because the team feels strongly and passionately about empowering communication, connecting communities, and building stronger and efficient neighborhoods. It takes a lot of courage and commitment to run a non-commercial business for a social cause and benefit that worth as much as a profitable goal. Confident of the company's potential and its success to come, the iCommuniti techheads have just what it takes to stand by their passion with big challenges. The engagement in both economically and socially prominent projects and initiatives will continue to help the team in realizing their goal of promoting sustainable technology for a great cause, and the promise of: “Be connected. Always.”
