IDC Profiles Ten Canadian Software Companies to Watch

There are lessons to be learned from emerging software vendors in Canada. Not only must these companies contend with their own internal challenges; small companies must also keep up with the ever-changing ICT industry, evolving regulations and standards, and large competitors with even larger marketing budgets. Only a unique mix of factors – some over which they have control and others which they are at the mercy of – create small, stable and growing new businesses.

IDC’s upcoming study, 10 Canadian Software Companies to Watch, profiles 10 relatively small, emerging software companies that IDC believes are worthy of highlighting to the broader industry and that we believe have the potential to make an impact in the ICT market. The analysis in this study provides valuable input to ICT vendors, large and small, to identify success factors employed by top emerging Canadian software vendors.

The report will be published this summer, and available at www.idc.com. It will be one of a series of documents on Canadian-grown ICT companies, offering insight into the success factors employed by promising Canadian software vendors, and how other companies may learn about their unyielding determination to manage tight budgets, personnel constraints, and scale for growth.

EDC Helps Companies Deal with Risk

Paul Day, ICT Business Development of EDC, reaches out to those of you that are expanding into foreign markets.

Many Canadians live in an environment where information or entertainment is readily accessible through various forms of wireless technology. The same is true for much of the US and Europe; whereas Latin America and Asia remain exciting markets with numerous opportunities. Mobile connectivity is no longer considered a “nice to have” but has developed into a way of life.

Canadian “know how” underpins much of the enabling and delivery capability as well as the content of what is consuming our ‘connected’ time. With lots of global opportunity, Canadian companies of all shapes and sizes are looking outside the friendly confines of Canada to expand their business. All foreign markets are furiously deploying wireless services and applications across various technologies. Canadians are exporting hundreds of millions of dollars worth of wireless products and services each year; and there is still a lot more to go.

Sounds good! Canadians know their business, how and where their services apply, so what’s stopping you?

Let’s see. Financial risk comes to mind: currency, credibility, trade regulations, localization, feet on the street and above all – knowing your customer to ensure that you are paid for what you do – are all factors often outside of your business control.

There are however, a number of resources available to you to mitigate many of these risks during your expansion into foreign markets: Technology clusters, industry specific trade shows, government departments and crown corporations to name a few. Export Development Canada (EDC) knows how to deal with risk. It specializes in supporting small and medium sized corporations expand internationally whether it is to the US or across an ocean. We can work with your financial institution or directly with you on a surprising variety of financial products and services. Call us; we would be pleased to help.
