What's Inside

ED's Diary

Sometimes, when you look back over a month, it's amazing how many different things get done. Here's just a brief rundown on what kept your executive director busy this month.

November 1 – The October newsletter has been sent. An easy month so far!

November 5 – MoMoVan meets to discuss and celebrate disruptive technologies – and, of course, to network and enjoy gourmet pizza and some fine brew at Granville Island Brewery. Over 90 people turn up, causing the pizza to run out early. Must remember to order more pizza next time.

November 6 – Western Economic Diversification announces a $165,000 match funds grant to WINBC, spread over two years. We've been honored with the visit of Mr. Russ Huibert, MP who made the announcement at WINBC's office. Just what this fast-growing sector needs to champion our industry and promote growth in BC, in Canada, in the world. More please!

November 8 – Invited to the Canadian Tourism Commision's 3-day eConnect convention and delivered a well-received presentation on the future of mobile marketing to 320 of the top tourism people in Canada. I closed my presentation telling the country that WINBC is here to help the Canadian tourism industry go mobile. Liked the way their event at the Fairmont Waterfront was handled so much, that we've engaged the same company to help stage our Pacific Northwest Wireless Summit (PNSW-08), this coming January 15, 16 & 17.

November 11 – Planned new vision, branding, strategy and action plan for the Pacific Northwest Wireless Summit (PNWS) for more than a month. Begin actual work on PNWS web site. Fortunate to have the help of a small but talented crew: an award-winning graphic designer; Susana Lo, our creative and knowledgeable marketing manager who did all the development and ecommerce integration and didn't sleep for about a week, and John Friesen, an award-winning writer, who chained himself to his keyboard for several days.

November 15 – Missed the Wireless Connections event in Banff put together by WiTec from Alberta, where WINBC was a bronze sponsor. Love our colleagues but needed to meet the deadline for our own event. Almost ready to go live.

November 16 – Launch Pacific Northwest Wireless Summit web site after five days of intense work! Helps that we regard this as a fluid, Web 2.0 type project. The site is functional on the first day and has improved every day since. Check it out at www.pnwsummit.com.

November 19 – Offers of sponsorship and other enquiries for the Summit start coming in. Literally one business day after the site goes live, I get a call asking what sponsorship opportunities are still available. Love the idea of getting things done just in time!

November 22 – Spent the morning with the folks from the 2010 Commerce Centre and sister tech associations like BCTIA, New Media BC and Life Sciences, trying to plan a Technology Week at the BC Olympic Pavilion in Beijing. Brian Krieger, Director with 2010 Commerce Centre showed us the mockups of "our home" in the Chinese capital during the 2008 Olympic Games. We need to identify members who want to do business in China and want to travel with us in May 2008. We are looking at ways to minimize the cost of a trade mission like that for our members.

November 24 – Yes, we work on Saturday. MobileCamp is another first in WINBC's life. Together with Handi Mobility, one of our recent member companies, and WIP (Wireless Industry Partnership) we created an event for the wireless and Web 2.0 developer community. The event happened at WorkSpace in Gastown. It was a success. Forty or so developers learned from each other. We'll do it again in six months.

November 27 – Get the MoMoVan newsletter out today. Need to postpone event about money, VCs, angel investors, NRC/IRAP programs to Feb. 08. Susana came up with the idea of a WINBC Xmas party (another first). Let's ask members if they want it.

November 28 – Face_Time with Microsoft. It took many months of planning for this, but now it's happened. Our large boardroom at WINBC was full. Six member companies met with Microsoft afterwards in 1:1 meetings. I heard good comments. Members who participated told me they were happy.

November 29 - Invited to NOKIA University Relations Forum. Very good event held at Nokia Multimedia Center in Burnaby by our member, NOKIA. Interesting presentations from top researchers at UBC, SFU, and UVIC. Also a few promising wireless start-ups. Brad Lowe and Glenn Roy want to work with us to open up the event and let all BC and Canadian wireless companies know about it. Next one in about six months.

November 30 – So many last minute details to deal with on PNWS-08...improve web site...call sponsors every day...email speakers every day...follow up with exhibitors every day...arrange details for SPIF...invite Hon. Colin Hansen to our event. Also, for this issue of the newsletter... make copy changes... check design and make layout adjustments... entertain second thoughts about content... insert last minute news. But, finally, we've put this issue of the newsletter to bed. And so to bed for me, as well!

November 30 Midnight – Wide awake. Less than 7 weeks left until the summit!

I welcome your feedback or comments. You can reach me at michael@winbc.org

THIS MONTH'S SPONSORED PROFILE

BCIT's Industrial Research Facility for Web Applications Testing

The Internet Engineering Laboratory (IEL) is a Vancouver, BC based industrial research facility that provides web and wireless application developers a sophisticated test bed to expose their products to a variety of network anomalies, and validate and qualify the resilience, performance and scalability of their applications and devices against issues prevalent in the core and edges of the network.

One of only five research centers of its kind in North America, the lab is a part of BCIT’s Research and Development Centre that assists local SMEs in developing prototypes and software solutions for complex applied research problems. The IEL houses $2.2 million dollars of test equipment capable of emulating and testing both small and large-scale network configurations.

Local companies can test performance of their new web-sites in a realistic yet totally controlled environment and determine if the new system or application will work with an ideal network, the commercial internet, a degraded network, and an overloaded network.

The IEL is used by both local & international companies and academic researchers, and provides testing services in the following areas:

  • Web Site Volume Testing
  • Application Validation Testing
  • Capture Interactions with Web-sites and Replay as part of Function Testing
  • Capacity Planning Modeling
  • Network Performance Evaluation
  • Capacity of Network Devices
  • Quality of Service

FEATURED INNOVATION OF THE MONTH

BUZmob, by Contec Innovations

How do you distribute your web content to mobile phone users in an environment where most either don’t or can’t download software applications to their phones, and where only 7% have smart phones?

Contec Innovations has the answer with BUZmob, a mobile feed distribution service that lets content publishers deliver their content to any mobile phone that has a browser. The service automatically renders links on the fly, simplifying them according to the display characteristics of the mobile phone.

Once a mobile user signs up to BUZmob (from their mobile, of course), they can

  • search for blogs and RSS feeds using blogdigger
  • access those blogs and feeds, plus social network profiles from their mobile
  • search for jobs on several web job sites
  • create personal pages to store searches, RSS feeds and other pages, to save time on subsequent visits
  • search classified ads, real estate listings and price comparisons
  • check their stock portfolios, track companies and get business news
  • access mobile Wikipedia and IMDb
  • and much more to come

MEMBER NEWS

The biggest member news this month is the launch of the first ever wireless summit on January 16-18, 2008 in Vancouver, BC.

Pacific Northwest Wireless Summit is an event that was created for you, our members. The theme "Ideas. Innovation. Investment." has caught the imagination of wireless companies from Pacific Northwest and abroad. The initial focus is to bring together wireless companies from the Vancouver – Calgary – Seattle triangle.

As a member of WINBC you can take advantage of savings between 20% and 35% when you register for PNWS-08. You can also apply for speaking opportunities, and you can register for the PNWS Innovation Contest (not to be confused with the Wireless Innovation Contest WINBC ran for the past three years). The Innovation Contest lets your peers at the conference vote live for the "Best In Show" exhibit.

If you're looking for marketing possiblities, consider sponsoring part of the Summit. You can be sponsor for as little as $500 or as much as $15,000. Opportunities range from sponsoring SPIF badges, to sponsoring delegates, speakers, receptions, parties, and more. You may want to register your company for the SPIF (Service Provider Investment Forum). If you qualify, you'll get to present in front of such world class carriers as AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Nokia Forum, Telus, Bell, Orange, SK Telecom and others – who may decide that you are the next company they want to invest in.

We have done our job. Now we need you to participate and make our event memorable.

For more details about this exciting opportunity visit: www.pnwsummit.com
