WINBC

What's Inside

a Letter From ED

How I got a great job by being a member of WINBC?

"You're one of our regulars, Michael, right?" It was Peter, one of the people on the hiring committee for the new Executive Director (ED) of WINBC.

"Yes I am, Peter" I responded. Then I told the committee that I was with WINBC from their beginning in 2001, and that they were still the best of the various associations I belonged to.

So here I am, two startups under my belt and six years later, accepting the ED position for WINBC – the voice of the most promising and exciting industry in BC.

I started Monday, September 10th and, for those of you who don’t know me, I am a serial entrepreneur, a marketer and a business development guy. You can check my full profile here http://www.linkedin.com/in/mbidu.

During the past three weeks I have talked with WINBC’s directors and many of our members, VCs, partners, sponsors as well as government officials from Canada, US, UK and even Finland and learned a lot about what YOU, the different stakeholders, really want or need from the association today and in the future.

For instance, YOU want more opportunities for networking with great people, in great locations. And you’d like the events to be free – or at least very affordable – so students from UBC, SFU or BCIT could afford to attend. So we rolled up our sleeves and are re-launching Mobile Monday Vancouver (MoMoVan) this October 1st. It’s at Granville Island Brewing (a great location!), from 6 PM – 9 PM. It is a grass roots event. Best of all, it’s FREE. Just register here.

Another thing you told me is that WINBC has to attract more quality members and sponsors. On that note, I’d like you to welcome Lypp, Canpages, and the BC Innovation Council as our newest members. Then welcome BDC Canada as sponsor of the MoMoVan Series, and the BC Innovation Council who are sponsoring the forthcoming, Granville Island event.

While you are welcoming those new companies to WINBC, take the time to say a special "thank you" to Erik Lagerway and Dan Gibbons from Lypp, Olivier Vincent from Canpages, Mathew Watson from the BC Innovation Council and Jenny Yang from BDC Canada Venture Group. They are the ones who brought their companies into the fold.

I think WINBC is a great organization with a huge, untapped potential.

Today our industry is involved in leading edge wireless research, wireless labs, location-based services, broadband infrastructure, mobile broadcasting, mobile communities, mobile local search, mobile TV and mobile games, MVNOs, and the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. And here’s more good news: Canadians and consumers around the world love their mobile phones more than ever.

We have created a sustainable industry of 250 wireless companies that employs more than 6,500 people and contributes more than $1 billion dollars to the wealth of our province.

I believe we can make a difference. I believe that together we can do remarkable things. In the eyes of the world WINBC should stand for value for members and sponsors, innovation, networking opportunities, fun and a healthy dose of competitive challenge. The future looks better than ever.

I look forward to working together with all of YOU.

Michael

P.S. You can call me Michael or you can call me ED (it’s short and less formal). Either way is fine with me.

FEATURE INNOVATION OF THE MONTH

What if you could interact with your mobile phone not just with your eyes and ears, but through your sense of touch as well?

Current user interfaces for mobile and handheld computing platforms principally offer user interaction through the visual and auditory modalities. However, mobile devices may be used in a wide variety of contexts that impair the effectiveness of those modalities. At the same time, more and more functionality is being layered upon mobile devices, while the physical size of the display and keypad has remained small. These limitations in the rate of information that can be exchanged between user and device represent challenges for mobile interaction design. Haptics offers a potential solution by providing an additional sensory modality that is also especially well-suited to the demands of portable, personal devices that are in contact with the user's skin.

To explore these issues we have employed the concept of haptic icons: brief tactile stimuli that are associated with a meaning. Haptic icons, under various names, have already been recognized as a new and valuable interaction technique, and we now endeavor to stretch their cababilities in terms of distinctions, memorability and meanings.

Find out more about Haptics and meet Dave Ternes at MoMoVan.

THIS MONTH'S MEMBER PROFILE

We keep coming across new companies and adding new members to WINBC. This month we highlight Lypp.

Lypp is a calling service that uses Instant Messaging to initiate one-on-one and group calls from mobile devices and your desktop. Users sign in to Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN or AIM on their mobile device and send commands to a Lypp 'buddy' to create phone calls. These commands send requests to Lypp's private network, which initiates a callback to the Lypp user and the other party or parties.
