Dan Gibbons, Co-Founder of Lypp tells us about his organization.

Lypp is a calling service that uses Instant Messaging to initiate one-on-one and group calls from mobile devices and your desktop. Users sign in to Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN or AIM on their mobile device and send commands to a Lypp 'buddy' to create phone calls. These commands send requests to Lypp's private network, which initiates a callback to the Lypp user and the other party or parties.

The idea for Lypp came from our frustrations with the wireless communications market. Particularly in Canada, consumers get a very poor deal and have few choices. For example, prices for long distance wireless calling have recently increased for most consumers from $0.25 per minute to $0.30 per minute, even though telecommunications costs are generally falling in other countries. We're starting to see Canada-wide calling plans but once you've used up the minutes in your plan you're still paying exorbitant rates for additional minutes.

Additionally wireless carriers are getting more restrictive about which third-party software will run on their cellphones, PDAs and Smart Phones. We saw an opportunity to leverage the data connections and applications that already exist on many of these devices to reduce calling costs for end users and deploy additional features.

We also recognized that we needed to be smart about communicating with potential customers. There are about 20 million cellphone subscribers in Canada and more than 10 times that in the US, so it was important to identify who among this vast audience could really benefit most from our product. We hit on Canadian BlackBerry users as our initial target. They tend to be heavy mobile users and spenders, and there are great Google Talk and Yahoo! Messenger clients available for all recent BlackBerry models. The result: it takes seconds for a BlackBerry user to set up Lypp, so the barrier to adoption is very low and we see this changing the dynamics of the Canadian wireless market quite significantly.

Our service is currently in open beta and is accessible at http://www.lypp.com. It's free to use until the end of October, at which time we'll be rolling out great value paid packages and a wide range of additional calling and group calling features. What's next? Well, without giving too much away we see Lypp becoming a platform that will give small and medium business users much more flexibility than they have today about how they pay, use and access wireless services.
